Madeira Drive scene on day of 2008 Brightona
Beautiful weather for the middle of October (remember the cold wet, wet, wet days of the start of September!) and thousands of bikes and bikers gathered on Madeira Drive for the 2008 Brightona. It was all there: rock & roll bands,  exhibitions, custom bike shows, stalls, prizes in many different categories - and also raising funds for the Sussex Heart Foundation.

Hope you didn't miss it!

Big Beach Boutique 4

crowds on way to Big Beach Boutique 4
On the day of Fatboy Slim's Big Beach Boutique 4 gig, the local paper - The Argus - ran with the headline: "Fears thousands of gatecrashers will target Fatboy gig." But all such fears were unfounded. It's true that many more thousands were there than the 22,000 ticket holders, milling all around Madeira Drive and Marine Parade, and the beaches next to Brighton Pier that survived being closed off. The gig was a curiosity for many onlookers. Not that they could get very close. There was even a flotilla of yachts, anchored off the beach. They were the lucky ones. Brighton Triathlon

The Brighton Triathlon is a fairly new event to be staged along Madeira Drive. It is organised by Urbanrace, a multi-sport event management company. The three sports of the triathlon are running, cycling and sea swimming. There are three categories (novice, sprint and olympic) with olympic being the toughest. It's a fairly tight squeeze to fit all three events on the Drive, but you can get a good view of the cycling and running action from Madeira Terrace, while the swimming is best watched from the beach.

It was a great weekend on Madeira Drive! On Saturday there were the National Speed Trials, and on Sunday it was the turn of the Ace Cafe Brighton Burn Up. The weather was September at its warm and sunny best, and many, many thousands turned out on both days.

The final day of the FIVB Under 21 World Championships was dry, though cool and cloudy.

In the women's event two Dutch teams made it through to the final, and the winners were Danielle Remmers and Marleen Van Iersel. A Dutch team also made it into the men's final, but they were defeated by the title holders,  Italians, Paolo Nicholai and Franceso Giontella.
