The Brighton Triathlon is a fairly new event to be staged along Madeira Drive. It is organised by Urbanrace, a multi-sport event management company. The three sports of the triathlon are running, cycling and sea swimming. There are three categories (novice, sprint and olympic) with olympic being the toughest. It's a fairly tight squeeze to fit all three events on the Drive, but you can get a good view of the cycling and running action from Madeira Terrace, while the swimming is best watched from the beach.
The event was well attended last year and again this year there were around 700 entrants.
Sea swimming is not to be undertaken casually. Last year the water was quite rough. Fortunately, this year the weather was fine and sunny, and the sea looked very inviting in the bright sunshine. A wet suit is compulsory, and the Urbanrace safety crew will pull any very slow swimmers out of the water for their own safety.
