2010 saw the start of a new key event on Madeira Drive. But unlike all the other motor vehicle runs that take place on the Drive, in the Future Car Challenge the direction of travel is reversed. Instead of travelling from London to Brighton, Future Car goes from Brighton to London - Pall Mall to be precise. As such, it is an early morning event and is all over by about 8-30 am. However, it is still well worth a visit if you want to see the latest in low emission vehicles from the humble van to extremely speedy and ultra quiet sports car like the Tesla.
The Future Car Challenge is scheduled the day before the famous Veteran Car run. Both are organised by the RAC. So, it's Saturday for the Future Car Challenge and Sunday for the Veteran Car run.
In the 2010 inaugural year there were 63 entries. The Volkswagen Golf blue-e-motion Electric was judged the best overall entry, though there were many classes of winners - most economical small, large; car, van, etc.
To be eligible to take part a vehicle must be:
"2.1.1. Road-legal Electric, Hybrid and up to 110g/km CO2 emission Internal Combustion Engine Passenger Motorcars and Light Commercial
Vehicles (max 3.5 tonne) produced after 1 January 2001."
This event will surely be a fixture for many, many years to come.
