About half way along Madeira Drive, opposite Concorde 2 / Madeira Lift, is the Yellowave Beach Sports venue. Opened in 2007, Yellowave is the UK's first permanent beach sports facility. It has 6 volleyball courts, which can also be used for beach soccer, beach rugby, footvolley, ultimate frisbee, beach handball, and beachminton (badminton played on sand). There is also a climbing wall.
But I hear you cry: Brighton has an unforgiving shingle beach! True, the Yellowave venue has been built right on the shingle beach, just above high tide, but the sand has been imported. It might seem odd that Brighton should have the UK's first beach-sand sports venue, but there it is. The vision thing was here, and not Blackpool, Morecambe, Portrush or any of the other sandy resorts around the country. And, again, Brighton may not have the sand, but it does have the sun more that just about anywhere else in the UK.
And Yellowave has plenty of the vision thing. Now that beach volleyball is an official Olympic sport, Yellowave want to go all the way. There are leagues for volleyball, soccer, and rugby. And the venue plays hosts to various beach sport championships and showcase events.
There is also a very attractive wood built cafe bar with a large south-west facing decked area. It is open all year round.
