The Brightona is a fairly new event to the Drive, and from the start has been on a scale to rival the Ace Cafe Brighton Burn Up motorcycle event. It is not a run, but a show and a gathering, a celebration of all things biking.
The Brightona is a locally-organised event which also has a charitable purpose: to raise funds for the Sussex Heart Charity. In 2006 £12,500 was raised. In 2008 it was over £23,000, and £28,000 in 2010.
Music is a vital part of the day's entertainment with three stages in action: a main stage, a rock 'n' roll stage, and the stage of Concorde 2, the Drive's permanent music venue. Many bands take to the stage.
There are also a great many trade stalls. So the shopping habit is well catered for.
Many bikers lavish enormous care and attention on their bikes, which become works of art, and not mere functional machines. Not surprizingly, the Brightona has a Custom Show, staged in an extended covered marquee. There are 12 categories: Best Chopper, Best Harley, Best Rat, Best Streetfighter, Best Custom Bike, Best Sports Bike, Best Trike, Best Scooter, Best Goldwing, Best in Show, Worst Rat, Best Hot Rod, Best Paint, Best Classic.
